Cleburne ISD is being investigated by both state and federal auditors for questionable expenditures, according to two letters received by Harold Gentry, who filed the complaints.

Both letters came from the Texas Education Agency headed by Shirley J. Neeley. The first , dated October 16, is from Ramon Medina, Director of Grant Audits, Division of Financial Audits. Mr. Medina stated "Based on our review of your allegations regarding the  mismanagement of certain federal funds, auditors have sent formal correspondence to the district informing them that the Texas Education Agency has initiated an investigation of certain federal programs."

Federal funds apparently were used to pay for some of the questionable expenses, such as expensive retreats for school administrators.

The second letter , dated October 19, is from Linda Fredlund, Auditor, Division of Financial Audits and addressed to Robert Damron, Superintendent, with copy to Harold Gentry.  Ms. Fredlund in her letter to CISD said "We are enclosing several expenditures made by the district that fall within the jurisdiction of the Investigation Section of the Financial Audits Division. It is our understanding that another section of the Financial Audits Division will be making inquiries regarding expenditures charged to federal programs.

"Our questions are written in red pencil on the enclosed documentation sent to us by the complainants. What we need is supporting documentation regarding the expenditures and copies of the posting to the detailed general ledger.." CISD has 20 days to respond.

Copies of the letters are posted. Click for the  Medina letter and the Fredlund letter.
