TEA Says Pay Back $362,000 within 30 Days

Cleburne school officials have 30 days to repay $362,304.31 in federal grant money that the TEA ruled they misspent. A special school board meeting has been called for Monday, July 28 at 6 p.m.

Future federal grant spending must be authorized before being spent. TEA has labeled the district a "high-risk grantee" that must get agency approval before spending its $4 million a year in federal grant money. The restriction could last a year or more, until TEA is satisfied that the district has corrected problems identified in its Final Report.

According to Martha Deller in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, that’s what the Texas Education Agency told Cleburne Superintendent Ronny Beard on Tuesday in a follow-up to its July 14 audit report.

In other news, Lancaster ISD has been assigned a Conservator after a 9 month investigation by TEA. Lancaster had many of the same spending problems as Cleburne ISD.
